BEA-Products in Oracle’s SOA- and Middleware Environments

Comment by Thomas Karle, Division Manager at the long-term Oracle-Partner PROMATIS, on the topic: Takeover of BEA Systems by Oracle

Ettlingen, February 28, 2008 – Some of Oracle’s customers and prospective clients are concerned by the takeover of BEA by Oracle. They wonder how things will be with Oracle Middleware and Oracle SOA products. Contrary to prior takeovers this time Oracle took over a competitor with a product portfolio that is partially overlapping especially in the SOA and Middleware environment. The main reason seems to be the acquisition of market shares. The purchase places Oracle on second place right after IBM, says Gartner. And this results in leaving Microsoft with .NET-Framework way behind. Oracle therefore has secured its leading position – together with IBM – in the range of Java-based Middleware.

For the consolidation could be deciding which products Oracle will use to realize the new Oracle standard software Fusion Applications. Since throughout this year some modules of Fusion Applications will be introduced to the market, the existing Oracle Middleware components will head the field. So customers who decide on the current Oracle components are on the safe side. In addition mainly BEA’s AquaLogic Registry Repository could be integrated as central management tool for Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA). Pre-defined processes and templates are supposed to help the IT responsible as "Best Practices" when governing SOA. Tantalizing is also the question whether or not the also taken over BEA tool AquaLogic BPM will compete with the currently used foreign product ARIS in Oracle Business Process Analysis Suite. BEA AquaLogic BPM offers process management based on BPMN and UML.

The next version of Oracle’s Fusion Middleware will probably and most likely include products from both producers. However, the technological basis will remain determined by the current Oracle components.
